SURPRISINGLY SUGARY FOODS

Desserts are obviously sugar-filled, but so are many processed foods typically considered to be healthy or savory, so it's important to double check the label.

In order to determine what unexpected household foods are more sugary than we think, I took a trip to a local grocery store and read the labels closely.

Here are some astonishing comparisons of "healthy" foods vs. some that are decidedly not so.

SSF #1: Yogurt

Dannon Fruit on the Bottom (22g sugar)   - VS -   YoCrunch M&M's and Vanilla Yogurt (28g sugar)

YoCrunch's yogurt (28g sugar), which looks decidedly like dessert, has only 6g more sugar in a slightly larger container than Dannon's yogurt (22g sugar), which appears healthful.

SSF #2: Granola

Giant Vanilla Almond Granola (15g sugar)              - VS -             Cap'n Crunch Cereal (13g sugar)

Granola is typically thought of as a healthy breakfast alternative, but it packs more sugar than expected. In this case, Giant's granola has 3g of additional sugar than Cap'n Crunch in a slightly smaller serving.

Here are some additional foods with surprisingly high sugar content.

SSF#3: Crackers

Wheat Thins Original

(5g sugar, 4g added)

SSF #4: Breads

Giant Hot Dog Rolls (3g sugar)

Stroehmann Dutch Country Whole Wheat Bread (3g sugar)

SSF #5: Barbecue Sauce

Newman's Own Original (16g sugar)

SSF #6: Tea

Gold Peak Sweet Tea (32g sugar)
